As they taste so distinctively sweet, Pink Lady® apples are popular with children who might need to be persuaded to eat their five portions of fruit and veg each day. Felicity Aston At 27, Felicity has long been fascinated with Snow and Ice. Having read Physics and Astronomy at University College London she went on to study Climate Change in the Antarctic at Reading University. Felicity joined the British Antarctic Suvey as a Meteorologist in 2000 and became only the 9th woman to overwinter at Rothera Research station on the Antarctic Peninsula. Since returning from the Antarctic in 2003 she has travelled and expeditioned in Greenland, Canada, Europe and South America. Felicity is now a freelance travel writer. What excites you most about the Scott Dunn Polar Challenge? I'm really looking forward to getting out on the ice with Sam and Tori. When we get together there is a real buzz of excitement, a strong feeling of camaraderie. We all have a singular goal - to finish the race - and its great to share that. The sense of achievement when we all cross the finishing line together will just be enourmous. Why did you decide to do the Scott Dunn Polar Challenge? It is not often that you are given a reason to go to the North Pole! There is something special about the polar regions that I think is irrisistable anyway, but the idea of a race adds an extra dimension. What motivates you generally? Reading about other people who have done so much with thier lives inspires me to do more with my own life. I'd never forgive myself if I felt I had wasted it. I have heard amazing stories of courage and survival. Some people go through terrible things and manage to keep smiling. They inspire me to make the most of what I have. What is your biggest fear about the race? My biggest fear about the race is making an idiot of myself by not being prepared! That fear drives me to train harder, to be fitter and to be more competitive. What has been the hardest part about training? Getting out of bed on a cold, wet sunday morning to go for a run. Training schedules look so achievable on paper but the reality is infinitely more miserable!! What skills will you bring to the team? Of the three girls I have the most cold weather experience. I hope this will help us prepare for the Arctic cold but I am expecting it to be very different to the Antarctic. Apart from that I make a good strong cup of tea in the mornings! Thoughts on women in the Arctic. Women have been exploring and travelling in the Arctic for decades. The example shown by women like Caroline Hamilton mean that it is not unusual for gilrs like us to be hungry for our own adventures..... What will you miss the most? A nice hot shower and a clean pair of underpants every morning. |
